Squirrel Identification & Prevention

What are squirrels?

A type of rodent, squirrels belong to the Sciuridae family and are related to prairie dogs and chipmunks. Though there are more than 200 types of squirrels, the two most common species in Cumming, Georgia, are the gray squirrel and the flying squirrel. Both are types of tree squirrels and spend most of their time up in trees or on the roofs of buildings.

Despite their name, squirrels come in various colors, such as white, gray, brown, and black. We typically identify them by their bushy tails and short ears that stand up and off their heads.

Flying squirrels are a smaller species of squirrel. They are named because they move from tree to tree using a flap of skin between their back and front legs to glide through the air. It is important to note that these squirrels are only capable of gliding, not true flight.

Are squirrels dangerous?
Gray and flying squirrels are destructive pests that can cause damage around and inside our homes. Squirrels have sharp front incisors on their top and bottom jaws that they use to chew on and through different objects.

They notoriously destroy birdfeeders trying to get the birdseed out. Squirrels can damage siding, trim, cables, wires, and pipes. They chew and dig through our homes' drywall, insulation, cabinets, and upholstered furniture. Squirrels can also be problematic in our yards, digging up yards and gardens.

Squirrels also pose health risks. They contaminate food and surfaces with bacteria and pathogens they carry in their urine, excrement, and saliva, along with introducing parasites into yards and homes. Squirrels tend to be very territorial and aggressively defend themselves; you do not want to tango with a female protecting her babies.

Why do I have a squirrel problem?
Squirrels are problematic in our yards because our properties offer them the perfect habitat to call home. The many trees, utility lines, and buildings provide them places to live and travel aerially. Other things that attract the attention of squirrels include bird feeders, gardens, stacks of wood, yard debris, and areas of standing water.
Once squirrels discover their needs can be met in your yard, deterring them can be challenging. Controlling squirrels with the help of a professional is the most effective way to take back your outdoor space from these destructive critters.
Where will I find squirrels?
Usually, a squirrel enters your home through damaged vent screens, uncapped chimneys, or loose shingles and siding. While squirrels prefer to nest and live outside, they sometimes move into our homes to escape harsh weather or as a safe place to nest and raise their young.

Common areas where squirrels spend their time inside houses include wall voids, chimneys, attics, and vents. Squirrels also love to take cover inside outbuildings like sheds, garages, and barns.

The most common sign that squirrels have found a way into your home is hearing running or scratching sounds behind walls and above ceilings. Seeing squirrels regularly on your home's roof is another sign that they could be moving in and out of your home.

Commonly Asked Questions
Do I need professional help for squirrel removal, or can I handle it myself?

While you can attempt some DIY solutions, such as sealing obvious entry points, professional wildlife removal services offer the experience and tools necessary for humane and effective removal. Squirrels can be persistent, and their nests may be hidden in hard-to-reach places. Professionals can ensure that all entry points are sealed and provide ongoing monitoring.

What time of year are squirrels most active?

Squirrels are active year-round but tend to be more noticeable in the fall and winter when they seek shelter in warm places, like attics, to escape the cold. During the spring and summer, they are busy nesting and rearing young. Squirrel activity can spike during these seasons, especially in areas with abundant trees and food sources.
